How This Course Series Works
This series consists of the following course:
TFEDX2 – Using the Emergency Severity Index – 1.6 CNE
Provides triage scale/index-specific guidance and application
Curriculum Description & Purpose:
Many triage nurses experience a problem in their practice related to a knowledge gap in their understanding of the Emergency Severity Index – a valid and reliable five-level triage acuity scale on which many triage nurses have had little to no formal education. Evidence reflects that inaccurate and potentially dangerous triage decisions are made due to a lack of knowledge on the proper use of the Emergency Severity Index.
The purpose of this activity is to:
1. Provide a background for the conceptual and clinical components of the Emergency Severity Index algorithm;
2. Provide an overview of the Emergency Severity Index decision tree;
3. Examine each step of the algorithm in depth;
4. Provide practice scenarios with answers and rationale.
Course Learner Outcomes:
Successful completion of this activity will enable the learner to accurately categorize patients according to the Emergency Severity Index. Learners should also be able to predict life-threatening and high-risk presentations for patient acuity Levels 1 and 2 and by resources needed for Level 3, 4, and 5 patients.
To receive continuing nurse education contact hours certificate, the learner must complete all lessons and components of each course, complete the attestation and evaluation forms, and pass the exam with an 75% minimum pass rate.
